Squirrels are cute, furry rodents that are frequently spotted in residential areas. However, just because they look non-threatening doesn’t mean you want them on your property. If you have an abundance of nuisance squirrels in the trees on your property, here are some ways to get and keep squirrels out for good.
Remove What Attracts Squirrels
Consider what is attracting squirrels to your trees in the first place. Often, the answer is food, so remove bird feeders and houses from your trees. Squirrels are also notorious for terrorizing seasonal fruit trees. One way to keep squirrels out of your fruit trees is to regularly remove low hanging and fallen fruit. While eliminating the fruit off of your trees may not be desirable, being more proactive about harvesting your home produce can reduce your squirrel issue.
Scare the Squirrels Away
Squirrels are rather skittish creatures; therefore, it’s quite easy to frighten them. While the idea of scaring squirrels away may seem like it requires you to be on the alert, you actually have quite a few options:
Aim a sprinkler at your tree
A sudden splash of water would scare any creature away. Even if your sprinklers won’t reach your trees, the sudden sound of them turning on is probably enough to scare away a squirrel.
Let your pet chase squirrels away
If you have a dog, then you already have a great squirrel deterrent on your side as a barking dog will have squirrels running for the hills.
Create loud noises
On a similar note, a radio or any loud noise will likely scare squirrels away.
Use Coffee Grounds as a Squirrel Deterrent
For a more passive way to keep squirrels out of your trees, consider natural squirrel deterrents. Squirrels hate the smell of used coffee grounds. By spreading used coffee grounds around your squirrel-infested trees, the squirrels will likely leave on their own. Just make sure to keep this up regularly, or the squirrels may come back.

I have a 140tr old burr oak tree 10ft from my condo. I love the tree but I have so many squirrels that they make a complete mess. They eat the bark and constantly break off leaves.
